Black Sea

Warm climate, miles of sand beaches, ancient monuments, vineyards and modern resorts invite travelers to seriously consider Romania's Black Sea Coast as their summer vacation destination.
Beaches, stretching from Mangalia to Mamaia, are dotted with fine resorts and hotels, and countless sports and entertainment facilities.
Remnants of ancient Greek culture as far back as the 7th Century, BC, when seafarers established trading colonies along the coast, are still being discovered.
Romania's main sea resorts are centred on 45 miles of fine sand beaches and include Mamaia, Eforie, Neptun, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn and Mangalia.
The Black Sea coast has long been known for cures of arthritic, rheumatic, internal and nervous disorders. Eforie Nord and Mangalia Spas specialize in mud baths (the mud is taken from the area's salty lake waters) as well as in world famous "Gerovital" and "Aslavital" original rejuvenation treatments.
Vacationers at Romania's Black Sea Coast can also join organized trips from the seaside to a number of locations in the country, including the Danube Delta, the painted monasteries of Bucovina, to the nation's capital city, Bucharest, or to nearby Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey.

Mamaia
The major resort near Constanta is Mamaia, sited north of the city, between a magnificent 7 km (4.5 miles) long beach of unbelievably fine sand and a lake. It is especially designed for families with children.
Sports like sub-aqua diving and paragliding offer thrills from May to October. Restaurants, bars and nightclubs enliven the evenings. Typical country villages, the ruins of the ancient Greek fortress of Histria, and the Danube Delta are easily accessible.

South of Constanta - beauties and gods
From Constanta, a 50 km (31 miles) strip of fine golden sand stretches all the way to the border with Bulgaria; and it hosts a series of resorts poetically named after women and mythological gods.

Mangalia is renowned for therapy treatments
The 6th century BC fortified town of Callatis became today's balneary spa of Mangalia, with a special cure hotel. Here, as in Eforie Nord, Eforie Sud and the spa in Neptun, a wide variety of therapeutic treatments are available, including mineral-rich mudbaths, thalassotherapy and the famous Romanian Gerovital cure.
Medical staff are highly qualified and clinics and consulting rooms remain open all through the year. So you can combine professional treatment with all the pleasures of a seaside holiday.

Local Tours
As well as long-distance tours to the Danube Delta with its birdlife and mysterious waterways, or even to Bucovina and the legendary decorated monasteries, or to Bucharest, there are plenty of sites available in the immediate hinterland to tempt you away from sunbathing for days. The 7th century BC Greek city ruins at Histria have already been mentioned.
At Adamclisi, 62 km (39 miles) inland from Constanta, stands the impressive circular monument built at the end of the first century AD to commemorate emperor Trajan's victory over the Dacians. Cottage industries like woodcarving and pottery thrive in the villages. Vineyards producing Romania's savoury wines, including the famous Murfatlar, cover the hillsides.
Traditional costumes are displayed in folklore centres. And, if you feel like getting to the heart of the warm welcoming Romanian experience, there are Romanian feasts with local dishes, plum brandy, wine, music and dancing that will remain in your memory as part of a special seaside holiday.

Mamaia Beaches
Mamaia Beach is unique by its fine sand, 100-200m wide, assuring a very smooth entry in the sea mainly because of its over 8 km length. The favorable period for heliotherapy is longer than 12 hours a day. Low salinity, 15.5 grams per liter, sandy bottom, no stones at all, with a very light bent, with no floodings at all.

Mamaia Beach

Siutghiol Lake Mamaia
Siutghiol Lake ((“Ghiolul Mare” in the local folklore, or “Mamaia Lake” in tourist language)is 7.5 km long and 2.5 km wide. On its 1900 hectares, you can practice water sports such as water ski and yachting. Siutghiol Lake has a chalky island, Ovidiu, with a surface of 2 ha, where there is a restaurant.

Siutghiol Lake is separated from the sea by a sand belt, where Mamaia Beach was born. Near the Black Sea shore, the bottom is made up of beach sands, which are 3-4 meters thick. The sands cover the clay deposits which mainly extend on the rest of the bottom of the lake. The former sea shore, where the lake appeared, is made of Jurassic, Cretaceous and Sarmatian era deposits, represented particularly by claying.
On the western part of the lake, towards Palazu Mare and Caragea, there is a small island made of Cretaceous era deposits. On the southern part of Siutghiol there is Tabacaria Lake. Both lakes have sweet water which overflows mainly nearby the Institude of Oceanographic Research, its piezometric level being 2.5 m above the level of the Black Sea. The presence of several sweet water springs that feed the lake is well-known on both the western part and its bottom.

Water Sports
Are you hyper active? Are you keen on strong sensations? Do you want to try something different this summer? We invite you to enter the water sports world, either on the foamy waters of the Black Sea or on the calm water of Lake Siutghiol.
Kitesurfing – one of the most progressive sports at the moment. Kitesurfing, a new sport, strongly developed in the 90’s and initiated, mainly, by surfers who wanted a larger freedom of movement, higher speed, the possibility of gliding on water and fly at the same time. In Romania, on our seashore, kiteboarding has developed significantly for the last 3 years.
Jet skiing – This leisure option is, in fact, a combination between an ordinary boat and a motorbike. If you have tried it once, you will not give it up. The sensation given by jet skiing is unique, especially when you ski on longer distances. Addicts say that the freedom sensation is one-of-a-kind.
Windsurfing – it appeared in the 60’s in the world and in the 90’s in Romania. It is a combination of sail navigation (where it took the sail from) and surfing (where it borrowed the board from), propelled by a single sail attached to the board through a flexible round connection (Power Joint). Although it seems a small sail watercraft, windsurfing can offer unique experiences, very different from those of any other type of sail craft. Windsurfing has established the highest speed record in sail crafts.

Water skiing – Judging by its name, water skiing is the ski practiced on water and hauled by a boat. Its equipment is different from the one of mountain skiing and the techniques are slightly different, but the basis is the same: balance, courage and lots of fun. Since its beginning, in the 20’s, this sport has managed to attract more and more fans.

At Mangalia, the most southern town of the sea shore, the sun and sea water mingle harmoniously with the stone carved vestiges of the ancient Greeks. The bright place, bathed in the sun rays, with numerous natural therapeutic factors make you understand why the ancient Greeks choose to build one of the first colonies on the Black Sea coast on this site.
Situated in a rich and hospitable area with sunny hills covered with vineyards and fruit-bearing trees and waters full of fish, the citadel was very attractive to its neighbors during those times.
The Romans, the Genovese and Ottoman merchants ruled the city in turn. Former defense walls, Greek amphora, an old mosque shadowed by trees with rich crowns, cafes where you can taste a real “sand boiled” coffee, terraces with nut and pastries, almond cakes dipped in syrup and delicious pies, streets with delicate white houses, sparkling small squares are testimonies of the millenary and stormy past are the source of Mangalia’s unique charm.

On the very place where 2400 years ago there was the ancient city of Callatis today we can find an elegant resort. Wide beaches caressed by calm waves, with soft silky sand, lots of hotels, villas which provide board and lodging, impressive ancient ruins, small shops, smart cafes and terraces, turn Mangalia into a place where you can spend your time in a relaxing and pleasant way.
Here you can also find one of the most modern business centers in Romania – The “Black Sea Business Center”. The Black Sea Business Center houses both business meetings and relaxation tourism. For a long time the resort has been famous for the healing mineral waters used in the treatment of rheumatic illnesses, skin and gynecological diseases.
The bathing – sanatorium and the Balneal – Treatment Center are famous for the special treatments that they offer including mud and paraffin massages, plant based baths, hydrotherapy, acupuncture, and special mud messages. All treatments are performed by professional medical staff. You can enjoy the benefits of treatment throughout the whole year because the two centers are always open.

At 3 km to the North and at only 500 m from the beach there is the Mangalia horse herd which is worth visiting not only by those who love riding, but for everyone. Here one can find some gorgeous pedigrees and Arabian horses. The complex is not just another place to visit; horse races are organized here and riding amateurs can take riding lessons with specialized trainers.
During the summer there are a lot of festivals and entertaining events, which render a youthful and energetic atmosphere: Mangalia Days, the Romanian Navy Day, the Mangalia Festival and many more. There are spectacular fireworks organized at the end of the festivals, fireworks whose multicolored light is reflected into the forever restless sea water. You will definitely never forget the summer holiday spent in Mangalia!
